Akram Khan
Ustad Akram Khan, the exquisite maestro of music belongs to the famous gharana of Tabla called ‘Ajrada’, one of the most popular styles in the heritage of percussion in India. He received his initial training in music from his great grandfather Ustad Mohd Shafi Khan and Late Ustad Niazu Khan, who were famous for the technical style and guidance. Being the seventh generation of his family he continues his ‘Riyaz’ and training under the able guidance of his father Ustad Hashmat Ali Khan and blazed the avenues of Indian music to the world by redefining his own brilliant style of playing. He enriched the glossary of Tabla bestowing the combination of aesthetics and rhythmic patterns.
Akram Khan is known for his effortless fingers on Tabla which reflects the clarity and melody. His sense of perfect musical presentation on stage made him one of the most distinguished Tabla maestros for solo performance of today’s generation. He is credited as the most desired accompanying artist with vocal, instrument and dance, all the genres of Indian classical music.
Akram Khan is the recipient of Sangeet Praveen (Master of Music) from Prayag Sangeet Samity, and Sangeet Visharad at Chandigarh. This extremely consummate versatile musician also holds the Bachelor Degree in Commerce from the University of Meerut. He is also a Top Grade artist from All India Radio New Delhi and outstanding from ICCR.
He is fortunate to accompany his father Ustad Hashmat Ali Khan in various parts of world to spread the name of Ajrada Gharana at music conferences since his childhood and has been participating in prestigious festivals across the globe. In 1987, he performed with the legendary Sitar maestro late Ustad Vilayat Khan in Japan and in 1992 he accompanied the maestro to the United States. He has performed before esteemed audiences at the Kennedy Centre and in the Lincoln Centre in U.S.A. He was the part of the celebrations for the 50 years of India's Independence performing in India and as well as abroad with Pandit Bhajan Sopori and the other artists. He was also privileged to be the part of the celebration of 60 years of Indian Parliament in New Delhi by performing with Pandit Debu Chaudhuri in front of the honourable members of parliament including honourable Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. His recordings are archived by Sangeet Natak Academy, New Delhi for the scholars and researchers of music. He has given solo performances including Harballabh Sangeet Sammelan, Saptak Ahmadabad and Mumbai, ITC Kolkata and Delhi, Shankar Lal Festival, Vishnu Digambar Jayanti, Indo Occidental Symbioses, Sangeet Natak Academy Agartala, Spic-Macay to name a few.
In the year 1993-94 he was appointed as visiting lecturer to the University of Washington, Seattle, USA for delivering Lectures and Demonstrations on Indian music and its history. His disciples are all over India and as well as Abroad. Akram Khan and his father Ustad Hashmat Ali Khan established the Tabla Academy of Ajrada Gharana in New Delhi, India. He is a classic model of a true traditional Tabla artist who enchants the million spectators, disciples and the younger generation of today.
Akram Khan is honoured to perform to all the great masters of our country like the legendary Sitar maestro late Ustad Vilayat Khan, late Pandit Ravi Shankar, Pandit Rajan and Pandit Sajan Mishra, Pandit Jasraj, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Dr.L.Subramanium, late Ustad Sultan Khan, Pandit Debu Chaudhuri, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Pandit Birju Maharaj , Pandit Bhajan Sopori, Ustad Shahid Parvez, Pandit Bhudhaditya Mukerjee, Ustad Rashid Khan, Ustad Shujaat khan, Ustad Nishat Khan, Smt. Kala Ramnath, Shri Niladri Kumar, Shri Gaurav Majumdar, Shri Shubhendra Rao, Dr M.S. Gpoalkrishnan, Pandit Rajendra Gangani, Pandit Deepak Maharaj and many more artists.
